JEE (Mains & Advance)
JEE = Joint Entrance Examination is the principal national-level entrance examination for undergraduate engineering admissions in India.
Class 11u201312 PCM Preparationu2193JEE Mainu2193JEE Advancedu2193JoSAA Counsellingu2193IIT / NIT / IIIT / GFTI Admission
JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Who should appear for JEE?
For the conventional B.E./B.Tech route, students generally study:
Physics
Chemistry
Mathematics
A student normally starts serious JEE preparation in Class 11, although many students begin foundation preparation from Classes 8u201310.
There are actually different JEE Main papers:
Paper 1
B.E./B.Tech
Subjects:
Physics
Chemistry
Mathematics
Paper 2A
B.Arch
Paper 2B
B.Planning
The eligibility and subject requirements differ between these papers, so students should not assume that the B.Tech rules apply to B.Arch or B.Planning. The NTA bulletin is the final authority.
JEE Main
JEE Main is the first major stage. It serves two important purposes:
Purpose 1: Admission to institutions such as NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes.
Purpose 2: Qualification for JEE Advanced.
JoSAA currently describes the admission system as covering IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other GFTIs through its centralized process.
JEE Main Examination
For B.E./B.Tech, the examination tests:
Physics
Conceptual understanding + numerical problem solving.
Chemistry
Usually divided into:
Physical Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Inorganic Chemistry
Mathematics
Includes areas such as:
Algebra
Calculus
Coordinate Geometry
Trigonometry
Vectors
3-D Geometry
Probability
Statistics and other prescribed topics
The exact syllabus should always be taken from the current official NTA syllabus rather than an old coaching book.
JEE Main is Computer-Based
JEE Main Paper 1 is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.
The student goes to the allotted examination centre and uses a computer to answer the questions.
JEE Main Sessions
JEE Main has been conducted in multiple sessions.
The important advantage is that a student can potentially improve performance by appearing in another session when permitted.
The final score/ranking calculation follows NTA’s rules for that particular year.
JEE Main Result
Exam u2192 Response Sheet u2192 Provisional Answer Key u2192 Challenge Window u2192 Final Answer Key u2192 NTA Score/Result
NTA publishes the relevant answer keys and score information
What is Percentile?
This is extremely important.
JEE Main does not simply work like an ordinary percentage examination.
NTA reports an NTA Score/percentile, which is used for ranking and eligibility purposes according to the applicable year’s rules.
For example:
95 percentile u2260 95% marks.
A percentile tells you how your performance compares with other candidates in the relevant examination framework.
JEE Main Rank
After the relevant sessions, NTA determines the applicable:
NTA Score
All India Rank
Category rank/other applicable ranking information
The rank becomes extremely important during college selection.
For example, a student may compare:
Rank u2192 College u2192 Branch u2192 Category u2192 Home State/Other State rules u2192 Seat availability
Can You Get NIT/IIIT Without JEE Advanced?
Yes.
This is an important distinction.
For many NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes, the relevant admission route is based on JEE Main, followed by counselling.
So:
JEE Main + qualifying requirements
u2192 NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission possibilities
Whereas:
JEE Main qualification
u2192 JEE Advanced eligibility
JEE Advanced rank
u2192 IIT admission possibility
JoSAA’s admission system includes separate qualifying examinations for IITs and NIT+/other institutes.
JEE Advanced
Now comes the second stage.
JEE Advanced is the entrance examination used for admission to undergraduate programmes at IITs, subject to the applicable eligibility and admission requirements.
The official JEE Advanced website publishes the year’s eligibility criteria and information brochure.
Official JEE Advanced website
A student cannot simply register for JEE Advanced as an independent alternative to JEE Main.
The student must first satisfy the applicable JEE Main-based eligibility/shortlisting requirement and all other JEE Advanced eligibility conditions.
JEE Advanced Eligibility
This is one area where students make many mistakes.
Eligibility depends on several conditions, including matters such as:
JEE Main performance/shortlisting
Class XII/equivalent examination requirements
Year of appearance
Age-related requirements
Number of attempts
Earlier IIT admission/academic history
Category-specific provisions
The exact conditions change from year to year.
For example, the 2026 JEE Advanced criteria specify requirements concerning Class XII/equivalent qualifications and the compulsory PCM combination for the relevant IIT admission route.
JEE Advanced Examination
JEE Advanced traditionally consists of:
Paper 1: Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics
Paper 2: Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics
Both papers are important.
For students targeting IITs, preparation therefore needs to go considerably beyond merely learning basic formulas.
The focus should be:
Concept u2192 Application u2192 Advanced Problems u2192 Mixed Problems u2192 Time Management
JEE Advanced Result
After JEE Advanced:
Answer responses u2192 Answer keys u2192 Result u2192 Rank
Eligible candidates may receive a JEE Advanced rank depending on the applicable rank-list criteria.
But there is an important point:
Getting a JEE Advanced rank does not itself mean that an IIT seat has automatically been allotted.
The student still has to participate in the admission/counselling process.
JoSAA Counselling
This is the next major stage.
JoSAA = Joint Seat Allocation Authority.
JoSAA manages centralized seat allocation for participating institutes.
The 2026 JoSAA system covered 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 other GFTIs.
Official JoSAA website
JoSAA conducts multiple rounds of seat allocation.
The broad logic is:
Rank + Category + Eligibility + Choices + Seat Availability + Allocation Rules
u2192 Seat Allotment
Freeze, Float and Slide
The exact terminology and rules should be checked for the relevant year’s JoSAA business rules, but conceptually students may have options concerning whether they:
Freeze: Accept the allocated institute/program and stop participating for an upgrade.
Float: ccept the current allocation while remaining open to an upgrade to a preferred institute/program.
Slide: Remain within the same institute while seeking an upgrade to a higher-preference program, where applicable.
Students need to understand these options before selecting one.
Final Admission
After successful completion of:
JEE Main
u2193
JEE Advanced, if targeting IIT
u2193
JoSAA registration
u2193
Choice filling
u2193
Seat allotment
u2193
Seat acceptance/payment
u2193
Document verification
u2193
Institute reporting/admission formalities
the student completes admission to the allotted institute.
What Should a Student Study?
For a serious JEE aspirant, the preparation should be divided into three levels.
Level 1: Class 11 Foundation
Class 12 Preparation
The final preparation list should always follow the current official JEE syllabus.
JEE Main vs JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced is not simply “JEE Main Part 2.” The style and depth of questions can be substantially different.
